When and How Did World War II End
World War II ended with the unconditional surrender of Germany in May 1945, but both May 8 and May 9 are celebrated as Victory in Europe Day (or V-E Day). This double celebration occurs because the Germans surrendered to the Western Allies, including Britain and the U.S., on May 8, and a separate surrender took place on May 9 in Russia. In the East, the war ended when Japan surrendered unconditionally on Aug. 14, 1945, signing their surrender on Sept. 2. The Japanese surrender occurred after the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Aug.à 6 and 9, respectively. The date of the Japanese surrender is known as Victory Over Japan Day, or V-J Day. The End in Europe Within two years after starting the war in Europe with hisà invasion of Poland in 1939,à Adolfà Hitler à (1889ââ¬â1945) had subjugated much of the continent, including Franceà after a lightning-fast conquest. Then Der Fà ¼hrer sealed his fate with a poorly thought-out invasion of the Soviet Union. Joseph Stalin (1878ââ¬â1953) and the Soviet people did not concede, although theyà hadà to overcome initial defeats. Soon, however, the overextendedà Nazi forces were defeated at Stalingrad and the Soviets began to force them slowly back across Europe. It took a long time and millions of deaths, but the Soviets eventually pushed Hitlers forces all the way back to Germany. In 1944, a new front was reopened in the West when Britain, France, the U.S., Canada, and other allies landed in Normandy. Two enormous military forces, approaching from the east and the west, eventually wore the Nazis down. Celebrating Victory In Berlin, the Soviet forces were fighting their way through the German capital. Hitler, once the charismatic ruler of an empire, was reduced to hiding in a bunker, giving orders to forces that only existed in his head. The Soviets were getting close to the bunker, and on April 30, 1945, Adolf Hitler killed himself. Command of the German forces passed to Admiral Karl Doenitz (1891ââ¬â1980), and he quickly sent out peace feelers. He soon realized an unconditional surrender would be required, and he was ready to sign. But with the war over, the tenuous alliance between the U.S. and the Soviets was turning frosty, a new wrinkle which would eventually lead to the Cold War.à While the Western Allies agreed to the surrender on May 8, the Soviets insisted on their own surrender ceremony and process. This took place on May 9, the official end to what the USSR called the Great Patriotic War. Victory in Japan Victory and surrender would not come easily for the Allies in the Pacific Theater. The war in the Pacific had started with the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. After years of battles and unsuccessful attempts at negotiating a treaty, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early Aug. 1945. A weekà later, on Aug. 15, Japan announced its intention to surrender. The Japanese foreign affairs minister, Mamoru Shigemitsu (1887ââ¬â1957),à signedà the official document on Sept. 2.à Sources and Further Reading Feis, Herbert. Gendered Societal Expectations of Appearance and Their...
Gendered Societal Expectations of Appearance and Their Effects Upon the Individual It has long been generally accepted that we as humans are influenced greatly by the things that surround our everyday lives. These things can include friends, family, co-workers, the media and even society as a whole. The society in which people live can play a huge role in how they view themselves and how they view others. Over the years researchers have come up with many theories as to how and why society has such a large influence on people. Now-a-days there are appearance prescriptions for everything in our society. It is not good to be too fat, but it is not good to be too skinny either. It goes on to suggest that the relationship found between obesity and depression is differentiated by gender because of the difference in societal expectations placed on women and men (Chaiton, 2009). The study concluded that females experience body dissatisfaction almost solely when they believe they are overweight, whereas both males who believe that they are under or overweight experience body dissatisfaction which can in all cases lead to some level of depression (Chaiton, 2009). As the aforementioned study showed societal expectations concerning appearance can, and often do, affect men just as much as they do women (Chaiton, 2009). Our society pushes men to be big, muscular and manly. To certain degree the more muscular a man is the more attractive he generally is within society. A study from an international journal regarding social behavior and personality concluded that the attractiveness of a man is more important in determining social desirability than the age of the man in question (Perlini, 2001). Comparatively the results of these two studies add up to say that the attractiveness of a man is one of the main factors in determining societal desirability and one of the biggest factors in being attractive is being muscular or strong. This puts a lot of pressure on males to be concernedShow MoreRelatedFrankenstein- Suffering of an Individual1650 Words à |à 7 PagesFrankenstein- Suffering of an Individual Anguish, pain, torment and suffering are all a part of our day to day lives. An Effective Teacher free essay sample
The qualities that define an effective teacher are very complex in my opinion. Everyone seems to have different ideas as to what the key indicators are. They range from; professionalism, communication, professional development, managing, guiding and strategies. There are even those of the opinion that it doesnââ¬â¢t matter what you do, children will always learn. However I have chosen professionalism as I believe that it is an essential attribute to being an effective teacher. Professionalism is defined by Merriam-Websterââ¬â¢s dictionary as ââ¬Å"Characterised by or conforming to the technical or ethical standard of oneââ¬â¢s profession. (Belcher). In order to gain and preserve the respect and trust of students, parents and colleagues alike and to provide students with the best education possible it is important to demonstrate professional conduct and practice. The guidelines for professionalism in the teaching profession are provided by Code of Ethics, National Profession al Standards for Teachers and Duty of Care. We will write a custom essay sample on An Effective Teacher or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page These define the ââ¬Å"whatâ⬠. The key however is being or acting professional, this is the ââ¬Å"howâ⬠, the effectiveness of a teacher. This is the true measure of professionalism. Some of the primary demonstrable characteristics or attributes of a professional teacher are communication, morals and ethics and professional development. Communication is an essential aspect in education, the means to send and receive clear messages to and from students, teachers, parents and community members. It establishes positive and effective relationships and connections with the involved parties. Communication can be in many forms namely verbal, non-verbal or written and used by teachers to constantly impart new knowledge or important information. The ability for teachers to apply the characteristics of good and effective communication in all its forms, to a diverse audience with different backgrounds and interests and to minimise the barriers, for example noise, misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the messages are the makings of an effective teacher. In the article by Prozesky, he states that the most effectual way to overcome these barriers is to have two-way communication with regular feedback provided by the receivers. Professional ethics is not achieved by only purely applying the ethical codes of practice nor professional standards which embody the core principles but by also applying professional skills and personal skills (caring and nurturing) and ethical behaviour in the form of attitude, intention, words, acknowledgement, respect (inside and outside of the classroom), fairness and equity with regards to individual circumstances, colour, creed, age, social-economic status, to name a few. Brock (1998) says that when dealing with ethics and professional standards there are two questions to ask; what should one do and what one should not do, what is right and what is wrong and what is appropriate and what is inappropriate. These questions result in a number of ethical dilemmas that face the teacher such as truth versus loyalty, individual versus community and religion versus morals. Early Childhood Australia has published a guide to help teachers deal with every day ethical dilemmas. According to Marsh (2010) ethical decisions have been categorised into five different levels of decision making. Open decision making, limited decision making, decisions made by the teacher, security seeking (delegation) and avoidance. Several ethical relationships exist within the dynamics of a school environment; these include ethical relationship between the teacher and the education system for example, the education system restricts teachers on what they should teach. The teacher and the principal, an example being that the teacher and principal have different values and the principalââ¬â¢s values will over ride those of the teacher. The teacher and the students where the teacher develops emotional bonds with his or her students and there is a mutual respect between teacher and student. The third quality that defines an effective teacher is professional development. In order to be a good teacher you need to be a good learner too. The demands on teachers to find new ideas and forms of teaching are increasing. Teachers need to be innovative and therefore attend professional development days which will help them continuously enhance their competencies and provide their students with problem solving skills and advanced thinking thus elevating them to higher levels of achievement. The desire to expand their knowledge base, stay current and gain a broader exposure to information provides this opportunity. Through numerous examples it is clear how important communication, ethics and professional development are to professionalism. These attributes will help teachers to be more effective in imparting knowledge and wisdom to their students. All of these attributes will allow the students to really focus their energies on learning and engaging with their education. Even though all of the attributes are vital for effective teaching one must never forget that the purpose of effective teaching is ââ¬Å"that teachers make a difference, (Boyd, 2009).

This will ultimately raise the awareness of the brand.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Property Marketing Plan for Sony Corporation specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Marketing tactics Pre-event strategies Sony will raise awareness among people in order to remind the public of the partnership it has had with the Rangers (Kurtz 37). The public awareness will involve ads; commercials will account for about 60% of the total budget set for ads during the pre-event period. The purpose of the pre-season advertisement is to instill a notion in the minds of the public that the coming season is a fully entertaining event; by its advertising Sony hi ghlights the fact that thanks to the digital TV any person has the chance to watch their team perform and play. Therefore, if Sony can provide such an entertainment at the ballpark, then the product will appear even more entertaining in homes. During the sporting period During the sporting season, Sony will take the advantage of the massive number of fans visiting the stadium to watch their team performing on the pitch (Koekemoer and Bird 21). The company has weighed the advantages of advertising its product during the sporting season. The estimated number of fans attending every sporting event at the Ballpark is around 42,719. During the season, Rangers plays about 162 games, 81 of which are home events. This means that every season around 3.4 million fans attend home events. By placing the advertisements in the Ballpark, the company will make sure that about 3 million fans see the ads 81 times in the Ballpark and 162 times on TV screens. The marketing tactics during the season wil l also involve television advertising during out matches. In this case, Sony will seek to advertise itself in the leading sporting media ââ¬â the Fox Sports TV that reaches approximately 6.5 million homes in the five southwestern states. The Sony product and its name, consequently, will appear every time Rangers Club appears on the television with additional ads to remind people about their partnership with the club. Finally, during the season, Sony will communicate the role it plays in sponsoring the club by placing its ads free in the clubââ¬â¢s print magazine, on social media pages and the internet (Kress 231). Rangers has an estimated number of 3 million visitors of their website every season, most of whom are looking for daily updates about the club, its events and performances.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Visitors to the website will gain awareness that Sony is the sole sponsor of the club, and the one that organizes the events they enjoy watching. Graphics, pictorial representatives and videos on Sony products about their importance in homes will appear on every page at Rangerââ¬â¢s official website and on social media pages. (Koekemoer and Bird 21). Post-event Every post event will involve an analysis of the clubââ¬â¢s performance, its strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities. The analysis will be fully a project of the Sony Company and the Club. Airing the analysis of the team performance on TVs is likely to attract a large number of viewers, especially men who are Sonyââ¬â¢s main target group. Promotion mix Sonyââ¬â¢s completive advantage will largely rely on its strategy of sponsoring the big club. Competitors sponsor only a few sports events or clubs in the region. The promotion of the Sony product will rely on the contract between the company and the club. Television ads will take up 60% of the total budget; they will attract attention of most fans, who check on the updates about the club and its events on television. TV commercials will run throughout the season during games, and will frequently appear on television during the pre and post-game analysis. Secondly, fans may buy and read print media, including the official yearbook, the clubââ¬â¢s magazines and its pocket schedule. In each of these kinds of media, Sonyââ¬â¢s product and name will appear as a part of the game and the team. Its name and pictures of the products, including their benefits, technology and favorable prices will appear on several pages. Print media will take up 20% of the total budget. Fans like visiting the club website for updates on its events and other information. In addition, the club has some accounts with leading social media. The agreement with the club will allow Sony to place its ads on both the website and the social media pages. The internet takes 10% of the total budget. Finally, billboards, most of which being digital technologies created by Sony, will appear around the stadium as well as in the lounges, cafeterias, inside the stadium and on the way to it. Creative brief The TV ads will reach the largest number of customers. The internet and print media ensure that every fan seeking information about the club sees Sony products quite often, while billboards seek to create an impression that Sony is the only partner to the fanââ¬â¢s club (Charan, Bossidy and Burck 122).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Property Marketing Plan for Sony Corporation specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Men, mostly those between 35 and 50 years, are the target group of the advertising company. Tuesdays with Morrie Essay Example
Tuesdays with Morrie Essay Example Tuesdays with Morrie Essay Tuesdays with Morrie Essay I read the assignment in the syllabus, I was disgusted. I didnt want to read a book, and I didnt honestly plan to do so. I mentioned my frustration to my roommate. When she asked what book, I told her. It turned out she owned her own personal hardcover copy of Tuesdays with Morris. I took the book, and read the first couple pages. The first couple of pages turned Into the first couple of chapters. I ended up reading the book in record time. When I finished reading It, I went and ended the movie as well. Then I went back to the syllabus. Read the book, and write a reflection paper on it. Thats a pretty broadly stated assignment I thought. At first, this bothered me and I didnt know where to start, but now I am relieved that I have that kind of freedom in writing this paper. I am not going to sit and report on what the book contains as far as plot. That would make this a report and not a reflection. As I think back to the book, many things go through my head. First, I think of Mitch, then Morris, and then I think of the many parallels between this story and my own relationship with a close teacher of the past. Mitch Album proves In this book that he has beautiful writing skills. At first I cried, and couldnt bare the thought. He had always inspired me to be a teacher, but now for a different reason then before. At one point in time while reading the book, I stopped mid-sentence, pulled out a piece of lined paper, and rote a letter to my eighth grade teacher, who was a friend of my father. When I finished the book, I began to wonder what I would do when my teacher of life lessons died. The start of the book to the finish, he walks the reader through his own meetings with Morris. He appreciated silence, food, and dancing among many other things. As far as the interpersonal communication that can be observed through this book. There is an awful lot to mention. There was an extremely effective amount of indirect communication between Mitch and myself, the reader. Because of the effect on me, another set of communication took place between my teacher and me. His philosophy was that you must learn to die before you know how to live. He appreciated life and all the little things in it. Even though I dreaded this assignment when I first received it, I have come to appreciate it and be thankful for it. The reader Is pulled in wanting to hear the next life lesson. Then I realized that I have the chance to do what Mitch did.

Article & Video Question Answers - Essay Example This solution will however not be as simple and straight forward as has been explained and challenges as reduced incentives are to be expected and counteractive measures developed. Dr. Lewisââ¬â¢ idea is very theoretical and appealing, however, its practicality is problematic. One of the potential problems is the lack of winning of the small market teams even after being given all the incentives necessary. Their lack of winning will bring all the plans to a dead end as there will be no returns on revenue sharing and not investments forthcoming. The league may also not buy the idea of revenue sharing as their payroll and investments are still high. They may also not want to offset the competitive imbalance in existence as this puts them way higher on the category and they may not want to change that. Having investors on the small market teams even with a few wins is not guaranteed and this whole solution is unreliable. Lewis, Michael.
